Long serving Press Secretary of retired President Daniel Moi, Mr Lee Njiru, broke the devastating news on Saturday, urging the country to give the family humble time to ponder what befell them.

“I have been asked by the Moi family to tell Kenyans to respect their privacy at this mourning period of their beloved kin,” said Mr Njiru.

Given his much private life, very little is known about Mr Jonathan Moi, the retired President's eldest son, who is credited for bringing up his other siblings upon the separation of his father from their mother Lenah Moi.

Jonathan other siblings include Gideon Moi (Baringo senator), Raymond Moi (MP Rongai), Philip Moi, John Mark, June Moi, Doris Moi and Jenipher Moi.

Despite his much private life, Jonathan was a lead rally driver in 80s and 90s. He retired in early 2000 to lead a private life, two years to his father's retirement after 24 years at the helm of power.

In 2002, Mr Jonathan gave a trial at Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat but lost to Musa Sirma, his father's long term ally. Since then, he quit from politics and has been acting as his brother Gideon Moi's advisor.

Mr Jonathan was a businessman until his death and invested in modern technology in agriculture and banking. He is rarely seen in media since his retirement from Safari rally.

But one of his sons, Collins Moi, has been hitting headlines in the recent times, with January's incident where he abandoned his girlfriend at a Kitale hotel still fresh in people's minds.

Mr Collins Moi is also battling a court case in which it's alleged that he stole two mobile phones. He's the only known son of Jonathan at least to most members of the public.
