Looking for a girlfriend? Nature has instilled in an intrinsic need to find a mate, in what is known as falling in love. In essence, it is all about continuing our species.

In the Kalenjin land, where many girls are closely guarded so that they do not stray, meeting with your girlfriend, finding one, or talking to your crush is restricted to a few days within the week or ceremonies which are far apart.

The days are:

Market days

In my village, market days are revered for different reasons by each age set. It is set on a Thursday, where people troop to quench their unique thirsts. Boys troop with the hope of finally meeting that girlfriend after a long wait. However, she may be chaperoned by her mother, which means you just see her at a distance.

Church

Sundays present a day not only for spiritual nourishment but also for other nourishments as well. You may see young men and girls huddled in a corner talking in low tones as the sermon goes on. They are catching up especially after Thursday, which is quite a long time.

Ceremonies

Be it initiation, weddings, engagements, or even burials, this presents a time for lovers to meet. Usually, this is the time most girls get pregnant since there’s no one to chaperone them. Parents are busy with the ceremony while kids are busy making out in the bushes.

On the other hand, the phone has really simplified things. Lovers now meet in the death of the night, after parents have slept. There was the throwing of a stone on the roof, but that was filled with hazards such as waking the parent or even dogs. However, the instances above still rule.
