The national and county governments should have sought alternative means to avert the ongoing nurses’ strike, Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has said.

Atwoli has now pointed an accusing finger at Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani over the health crisis following the decision of nurses to stay away from their workplaces.

According to the trade unionist, President Uhuru Kenyatta deserves better advice on how to handle the matter than what he is getting from Yattani, reports Capital FM.

Atwoli has urged the government to address the grievances of the nurses before it is too late for the sake of the common mwananchi.

On Wednesday, Uhuru had directed all nurses across the country to end their strike by Friday at 8 am or be sacked

The Council of Governors re-echoed the threat but nurses have vowed to stay put amid the order.

In a statement signed by Governor Oparanya and Health CS Sicily Kariuki, the government warned to take stern action against nurses who will go against the order of the Head of State.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary General Seth Panyako has, however, urged nurses not to report to work until their grievances are addressed.

The nurses have been lamenting of unpaid allowances and lack promotions among other grievances.
