The group was called in to eliminate the attackers on Tuesday after the other police arms and the red cross had done most of the rescuing.

The commandoes used remote-controlled robots to establish that the terrorists were stranded and trapped on the seventh floor, the highest floor at the affected complex.

This was at 3 am, early on Wednesday.

They formed two groups of seven officers each whichsoever were operating from the third floor using an electronic signals-powered robot to survey the situation on the seventh floor.

At this point, knowing that the terrorists' only remaining option would be to try and access the lower sixth floor, one team moved up and locked the entrance to the sixth floor.

The team then settled on the fifth floor while the second team used ropes to access the seventh floor through the sides of the building and entered through a window.

At this time, the other unit decided to use the darkness to rescue the people held in the other blocks, under the fear that waiting for daybreak would give the terrorists a chance to strike.

This was because the officers had disconnected power on the building to disable the lifts and limit the terrorists' movements.

“It was dark and we knew the floor where they were trapped was up there. We moved to the other blocks and managed to free 174 people who had been trapped for close to 12 hours,” an officer told the Standard.

After releasing the innocent people, it was now time to complete the job. The team moved in and stormed the room where the terrorists were hiding at 4 am.

Within seconds and despite the four hurling grenades at them, the commandos smeared the room with high caliber bullets, killing them instantly.
