Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has received a huge blow to his leadership at the helm of the city county after MCAs ganged together to say NO to him.
The MCAs overwhelmingly voted against Sonko's nominee for deputy governor post Miguna Miguna.
In the vote presided over by Speaker Elachi, City Hall cited Article 78 of Constitution on dual citizenship.
She argued that a state officer is not supposed to hold dual citizenship as Miguna has claimed to have.
“Article 78 of the constitution provides that a person is not eligible for election or appointment to a state office unless the person is a citizen of Kenya. Further, the said Article provides that a State Officer or a member of the defense forces shall not hold dual citizenship,” said Speaker Elachi.
She added that Miguna's case of citizenship was still in court and it had to be determined first so as not to create confusion in county leadership due to court cases.
“This matter has raised considerable controversy not just within precincts, but beyond the realms of our hallowed precincts,” she added.
The matter of Nairobi deputy governor has been a hot topic with Sonko accusing a certain group of Jubilee politicians and State House officials of coercing him to pick their preferred candidates.
However, Women Rep Esther Passaris has made a request to the governor to appoint her, arguing that she will never disappoint.
Passaris will be well grounded to make a go for the office as she boasts of numerous development projects in Kibera and other low-income estates in Nairobi.
She was also the power behind the Adopt-A-Light initiative that sought to illuminate the entire city.
