The animal, according to witness accounts, had strayed from the Malkamari National Park and had attacked the small girl as she romped near their homestead.

Seething with unbridled anger, the residents descended on the animal with all manner of crude weapons: from clubs to stones, from machetes to sticks.

They whacked it repeatedly until it could take it no more and dropped dead onto the ground.

''We were so angry that such a small girl was brutally killed by the hyena. It had to die even though that will not bring back our girl. The government should help us deal with these animals,'' an angry Abdullahi Gero said.

Human-wildlife conflict has been part of reality in Mandera county with residents having to contend with the prospect of being mauled by straying animals.
