Grief characterized the burial of a standard six pupil who committed suicide at Michatha village in Molo sub-county.

On Monday, hundreds of mourners including pupils of Sulgwita primary school turned up to give their last respect to their colleague.

The burial was held at Molo sub-county cemetery.

The death of Joseph Nehemiah Majimbo shocked many since his body was found dangling from the roof with a suicidal note beside,  where he had asked the family to cook chapits for mourners on his burial day.

 Former Molo legislator Jacob Macharia said the burial committee and the church had opted to ignore the details and request written on the suicidal note adding that if implemented would entice other youths in committing such unlawful acts.

He said the Ministry of Education should strengthen guidance and counseling in all schools to avert youths from drug abuse and indiscipline.

Various residents and leaders had donated wheat flour in respect to the suicidal note but the burial committee and the church refused to honour it.

However a spot checked at the home revealed that chapatis were part of the meals prepared during the mourning period.

"We decided to give the chapati issue a low profile at the burial site for various reasons, the church had termed the issue as motivated by an evil spirit. Another school of thought had claimed that the presence of children during the burial would also entice them in committing such acts," said a committee member seeking anonymity.

Nominated MCA Catherine Kamau said an increased suicidal case in Molo was worrisome calling on all stakeholders to address the challenge facing youths in the area.

She said education standards were dwindling adding that various entertainments joints were violating the set standards and laws by allowing in the underage.

Turi ward youth leader Kanyogoro Kihara urged the local police department to act on drug dealers and crack down coin slot machines used for gambling.

Michatha sub-location assistant chief Jackson Njoroge said all entertainment joints that allow children under the age of 18 years will be shutdown and stern measures taken against proprietors.
