The highly anticipated vote recount and scrutiny for Changamwe Constituency, Mombasa failed to take place as planned on Tuesday.

This is after it emerged that High Court Deputy Registrar was away on leave.

On January 12, Justice Njoki Mwangi ordered for the recount and scrutiny of voting materials in 80 out of 137 polling stations in the constituency following a parliamentary election petition filed by Mohamed Mahmoud, citing massive irregularities and illegalities in the election.

She ordered that the exercise be conducted between January 16 and January 20, 2018, by the court’s deputy registrar and a report filed by January 24.

Mahmoud is challenging the election of ODM party's Omar Mwinyi.

On Tuesday after the exercise failed to kickoff, Judge Njoki Mwangi said the court would appoint another deputy registrar or a magistrate to lead the exercise, with petitioner's and IEBC lawyer, Gikandi Ngibuini Justus Munyithya respectively, asking the court to extend the earlier timeline after the exercise failed.

She later said the exercise would be extended once the deputy registrar or a magistrate is identified.
