Addressing the media in Eldoret town on Friday, Hassan said four people had already been arrested in connection with the incident.

“We have names of other people involved and we will deal with them accordingly,” Hassan said.

“We won’t allow such lawlessness to prevail, we will confront it, crush it and bury it,” he added.

The county commissioner revealed that some criminal gangs had taken advantage of the situation in Eldoret town but assured locals that their security was guaranteed.

“I want to ask locals to go on with their activities without fear. We have enhanced patrols and will only be scaled down once we are sure the security has been restored,” he said.

Hassan, however, backed the county government's operation to flush out hawkers from the Eldoret town CBD which is the cause of the regular confrontations between the traders and enforcement officers.

“What the county is doing is within their constitutional mandate and the question of whether they are doing it right or not should be directed to them, for us, we have a duty to deal with any criminal element and ensure there is law and order.
