The Nyamira County government has been asked to provide civic education to its locals on projects it initiates in the county.

Borabu MP Ben Momanyi challenged the county government to improve its locals’ awareness on development projects by conducting civic education to them.

The residents have protested the construction of the multibillion-shilling Bonyunyu Dam in Nyamira county claiming that they will be displaced.

Mr Momanyi speaking in Bonyunyu on Saturday said the protest by the residents could be avoided if the county had educated the residents on the benefits they would receive from the dam.

He said the residents would not oppose projects initiated by the government if awareness is done adding that civic education is meant to equip the locals in acquiring proper knowledge on politics and development plans for the county.

“Most of the residents lack information and proper knowledge on some of the projects being initiated. Residents need to be well informed. That is the only way to avoid chaos. The government must take the responsibility of educating residents who are opposed to its projects,” said the MP.

Also present was Kitutu Masaba MP Shadrack Mose who accused politicians of inciting residents to oppose the project with claims that they will be displaced.

Mr Mose told the politicians to keep politics away from projects which are meant to benefit the residents in the county.

“This project will benefit the residents and the county. Let politicians speak the truth and keep politics away from development projects,” Mr Mose said.
