A High Court in Nairobi has extended orders blocking Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's directive on merging of the managements of schools sharing a compound.

Justice Chacha Mwita extended the orders after the ministry asked the court for more time to respond to the case.

"The orders of the court shall remain in force until the hearing and determination of the case," the judge ruled on Monday.

Justice Mwita slotted the case for a mention on March 5, 2018.

Matiang'i gave the orders last month, arguing merging of Boards of Management of schools in the same compound would end the property ownership wrangles.

However, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) opposed the directive claiming lack of consultations, adding it would effectively hurt the learning process in the affected schools.

Some schools in Nairobi affected by the directive include St Georges Girls School, which is in the same compound with St Georges Primary School.

Others are Nairobi Milimani Secondary and Nairobi Milimani Primary School.
