Police in Ruiru have recovered a police car that was stolen by thieves on Sunday morning.

The gang picked the saloon car outside a house in Zimmerman where it had been parked.

The car's driver, an officer attached to Directorate of Criminal investigations headquarters, had gone to visit a workmate in the area when he parked the car outside an apartment.

According to the Standard, the officer parked the car at around 5am but when he went for it at about 8am, he found it missing.

It was then that a search was launched for the vehicle that bore private registration numbers at the time it was stolen.

The police recovered the car on Monday night after a resident of Ruiru called police to inform that a strange car was parked outside his house for hours, the paper further reports.

The detectives rushed to the scene and confirmed it was the vehicle they were looking for.

Police say the thugs dumped the vehicle at Ruiru, 20km away from Zimmerman, probably after realising it belonged to National Police Service.

The car was towed to Ruiru Police Station with the area OCPD Isaac Thuranira confirmed the incident.
