According to neighbours, the fire broke out while the elderly man, identified as Joseph Gikuyu, was away from home. “We tried to put out the fire but we did not succeed because the flames spread too fast due to the strong winds,” said James Ng’ang’a, a neighbour.Ng’ang’a also noted that nothing was salvaged from the house. “Everything that was in the house was destroyed because efforts by residents and neighbours to extinguish the fire didn't bear fruits,” he said. Ng'ang'a said the cause of the fire has not been established but police who arrived at the scene promised to launch investigations into the incident.  Gikuyu is now pleading with local leaders and well-wishers to help him start life afresh after he lost everything in the inferno. “I have no place to go because all I had has been destroyed by the fire. Well-wishers and local leaders should come to my rescue and provide me with the necessary support to start life afresh,” he said.
