Eldoret hawkers have revealed why they have refused to occupy the Eldoret wholesale market.

Chairman Eldoret hawkers David Mburu said all stalls have already been given to "powerful individuals" from the county government, therefore, they have no space.

“Sometimes I wonder when hawkers are chased from the streets where do they want us to sell our goods yet the hawkers market is already full. For heaven sake, we are really suffering. Are we less Kenyans?” Mburu asked.

“We have information that their intention is to remove hawkers from the streets for them to bring people from their tribe to occupy and we won’t allow these to happen. The market has only 311 stalls with a population of over 6,600 hawkers, where will we go yet no one has been given a single stall,” he added.

They called upon Governor Jackson Mandago to intervene and resolve the situation before things get out of hand.

“We can upon governor Mandago to intervene and reallocate the stalls to hawkers and not county officials. County officials should also stop harassing us since we don’t have anywhere to go,” he said on Monday in Eldoret.

“We also want him to allow us to sell our goods in the Eldoret CDB between 6pm and 9pm since the town is less busy during those hours,” noted Mburu.
