Former veteran Likoni MP Suleiman Shakombo has called for Coast unity ahead of the 2022 general election.
Shakombo says that Coast region risks lagging behind if its leaders are not united.
Speaking to journalists in Mombasa Town on Tuesday, the former powerful Cabinet Minister said that 2022 will be a defining moment for the region.
He said that the Coast region stands a high chance of producing a president in the 2022 polls only if the leaders work together.
The veteran former legislator noted that the region has been excluded on key national issues and that it is time the current elected leaders pushed for inclusion.
“The time to redeem ourselves as Coast people from the yolks of exclusion is now and we can only do so if our leaders are united,” he said on Tuesday.
The former MP and Raila Odinga’s close ally asked Coast top leaders among led by Mombasa governor Hassan Joho to champion unity.
He said that politician’s must put aside their personal interests and fight for the rights of residents.
Shakombo said that Coast is still grappling with social, political and economic injustices that elected leaders need to focus on.
He asked coast residents to remain peaceful and shun politicians championing for their selfish interests.
Shakombo also castigated politicians who have been advocating for Coast secession, saying seceding is not solution to issues facing the region.
