As part of the county's poverty eradication program agenda, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has said he will donate 10 million beehives to certain households to facilitate the move.

Machakos County is aiming at fighting poverty by use of a technique 'increase household income'.

"My Government will initiate a Honey production program (Bee Keeping) by our farmers across the county," Mutua said.

Mutua said he will make available 10 bee hives per household for targeted 100,000 households from the next financial year.

"This is part of my government's agenda of fighting poverty by increasing household incomes," he added.

Bee keeping is very lucrative, a modern CAB hive produces a minimum of 60 kilograms of honey per year.

"A farmer with 10 modern hives can harvest about 600 kilograms. At a market rate of Sh1,000 per kilo, the farmer will make Sh600,000 per year from only 10 hives that require minimum work and hardly any supervision. This extra income translates to Sh50,000 per month per household" stated the Facebook post from Governor Alfred Mutua.

"This initiative between The Hive Group and our government will see farmers receive extensive training on bee keeping production and up scaling modern beekeeping using the CAB Hives that are specifically designed for the African bee," Mutua posted.
