There was grief at Ngai-Ndeithia Secondary school in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua County during an emotional send-off of nine people who perished in a grisly road accident along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road Tuesday last week.

A somber mood engulfed the area as the nine people from the same Kiboya village were laid to rest within Leshau Pondo Ward, with speaker after speaker calling on the government to institute stern measures to careless drivers, whom they accused of the rising cases of road carnage in the recent past.

The nine included the driver of the vehicle - Washington Kingori, a two-year-old child, and seven women.

Eight other passengers are nursing serious injuries in various hospitals among them Nyahururu County Hospital, North Kinangop Mission hospital, and Nakuru PGH.

They died while on their way home from Mukurwe-ini Nyeri for a burial ceremony of one of their friends when they met the untimely demise.

Hundreds of mourners who attended the fete, braved a scorching sun to bid farewell to the departed whose lives were cut short through the accident.

Today, leaders who spoke during the joint funeral services eulogized the deceased and lamented that their deaths have robbed Kiboya village dedicated people whose togetherness and sense of sharing life, took with them in both life and death.

Public Service and Gender Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, Nyandarua County Commissioner Samwel Kimiti, Governor Francis Kimemia, Senator Mwangi Githiomi, Women Reps Faith Gitau (Nyandarua), Mukami Wachira (Nyeri), Wangui Ngirichi (Kirinyaga) and their Laikipia counterpart Cate Waruguru called for stern measure that will help tame rowdy drivers especially in the public Service vehicles.

They said there was a need to come up with a lasting solution that will help bring to an end the cases of road accident on the Kenyan roads.

The lawmakers observed that there was a need for the establishment of a law that will ensure proper enforcement is of the traffic rules and regulations.
