Uasin Gishu Security advisor Paul Ruto has urged hawkers to occupy the wholesale market instead of selling their products on the streets.

He said this will reduce confrontations between the hawkers and county enforcement officers.

“I want to humbly urge hawkers to occupy the wholesale market and sell their products from there since we will not allow anyone regardless of their political or tribal affiliations to sell their goods on the streets,” he said in Eldoret town, Friday.

“Let us maintain order and follow the county laws and nobody will touch you. Our crackdown will continue until every hawker is removed from the streets. As county enforcement officers we are not targeting anyone but only those in the wrong,” he added.

He, however, warned the county askaris against using excessive force while dealing with hawkers and instead should handle them in a humane manner since they are not criminals.

“Let's handle them as our brothers and sister without harassing them,” noted Ruto.
