Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has broken his father's Denmark record after he played for over 533 minutes without conceding a goal.
In their first group match against Peru, the Danes scored a lone goal which was enough to win the match, but much was on the goalkeeper.
Kasper, by keeping a clean sheet on his World Cup debut, edged past his father in the number of minutes played for Denmark without conceding a goal.
The Schmeichel family have made so much history during their glittering goalkeeping careers winning numerous silverware at club level and playing tens of international matches for their country.
“I spoke to my dad afterward but I don’t think either one of us was aware of it,” he said. “Clean sheets is a misleading statistic. It gives you the platform to win a game but you can lead 5-0 and concede a goal. It’s a personal record which is nice but it’s not important. The important statistic is the number of games you win,” the younger Schmeichel said.
Denmark and Kasper, in particular, will have a chance to shine when they play Australia on Thursday, as the World Cup enters day 8.
