When Odinga was Prime Minister during the coalition government after the 2007 general elections, the fierce lawyer was his adviser before he resigned in a huff.

After his resignation, Miguna Miguna wrote a political memoir termed peeling back the Mask: A Quest for Justice in Kenya.

After publication of the book, he started a campaign to market the book across the country.

On Thursday August 23, 2012, Miguna Miguna landed in Kisumu to market his book. He settled in one of the City’s hotels with the audience ready to listen to him.

He did not however go far. Police were forced to whisk him away through the back gate of the Kisumu hotel as a mob bayed for his blood.

A section of those present at the book promotion event were annoyed when the former Odinga’s aide claimed they had been reduced to “voting robots” by the ODM leader.

“It is sad that as a people, you have been made voting machines without subjecting your leaders to the requisite scrutiny to know what they can do for you,” Miguna said.

He claimed that Mr Odinga did not mean well for the people of Nyanza. Soon afterwards, hell broke loose. The then Kisumu police boss Musa Kongoli and his then deputy Muthuri Mwongera had a rough time calming the chair-wielding youths, who were surging towards the dais to attack Miguna.

The officers shielded Miguna Miguna and rushed him in a different room before helping him into a police patrol car outside the hotel.

But he could not leave without a fight, “Miguna Miguna cannot be muzzled. If anything, such scenes only serve to energize my resolve,” he said.
