A man and his wife were on Tuesday evening given a thorough beating at a funeral after they were spotted giving the bodies of a man and his son sugar.
This happened in Nyasike village, Nyaribari Masaba, Kisii County.
The two who hail from Bogeka village in Kitutu Chache South were attending the funeral of the man and his son who died last week in unclear circumstances.
"When we questioned them why they were giving the corpses sugar they said that it would stop them from being bitter with the family," said Moses Mokandu a local who witnessed the incident.
Mr Mokandu said that their explanation given by the couple whose daughter is married in the family never convinced the mourners who started beating them up.
They were rescued by Nyumba Kumi officials.
Mr Marito Mogeni, the area nyumba kumi official said that the two cheated death by a whisker as locals were threatening to lynch them.
"We have never seen such an incident taking place in this area but locals did a mistake by taking action into their own hands they could have reported the matter," he said.
