Ms Mumbi said that she was arrested and taken to the police station, ordered to undress and made to spread her legs in front of male officers.

''I was arrested and taken to the police station. I was asked to remove all my clothes and then ordered to spread my legs in front of male officers who wanted to be sure that I was a woman and not a man. I asked them, ''Why are you doing this to me? If you can do this to me yet you are in government, what will those who are not in government do?'' Ms Mumbi said.

Ms Mumbi is a tout living in Kayole eking out a living from the matatu industry.

Her ordeal has triggered an animated discussion on social media with the vast majority of Kenyans lashing out at the police who were involved and called for stern action to be taken.

She said that after her ordeal she stayed indoors for weeks as she struggled to come to terms with what happened to her.
