Veteran politician and first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga proved the old saying 'there are no permanent friends or enemies in politics' twice in his political life.

The first one was his move to resign from his second in command position over his ideological differences with the man he had sacrificed his presidential ambition for.

Oginga had earlier turned down an offer from the colonial government to take over as the Prime Minister at the tail end of the colonial era, endorsing Kenyatta instead, but the two would part ways a few years later, marking the start of their political enmity.

He would later prove that there are no permanent enemies when he showed up for the funeral of the man who had politically suppressed and trampled on him for years, and had proven to be completely thankless.

On Friday, August 25, 3 days after Kenyatta's death, the then powerful image in the opposition shocked many when he showed up to pay his last tribute to his former political friend and boss at the Nairobi State House.

This was a surprise to many who would have expected him to keep off.

In a further shocking move, Oginga was dressed in a grand Luo traditional regalia and was blowing 'oporo', a trumpet.

To top it off, he was chanting 'dengo', a mixture of praise, poetry, pleasant memories, anger and disappointment for losing a friend.

In his earlier message of condolence to the bereaved family, he termed Kenyatta's death as 'gravely shocking and dispossessing'.

Kenyatta's body was kept at the State House for viewing before his burial on August 31.
