Governor Ali Hassan Joho who is battling a legal challenge to his re-election has defended himself in court, denying allegations leveled at him that he influenced the outcome. He said that the IEBC had done a stellar job in the conduct of the Mombasa gubernatorial contest in which he was declared the victor and handed the victory certificate.

This has been interpreted by many as a change of tune as Joho has been in the brigade that has been lashing out at the IEBC for ''bungling'' elections.''I am the duly elected governor of Mombasa... the election was free, and fair. The IEBC did a commendable job.'' Joho said in his defence. His words came in response to cross-examination by Hassan Omar's lawyers.Joho's endorsement of the IEBC appears to be at odds with NASA's assessment of how the IEBC conducted the elections. Raila Odinga has contended in public that the elections were not free and fair.
