Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has sent a stern warning to public land and property grabbers, saying that their days are numbered.
Speaking to journalists at the county offices when he held a meeting with the National Lands Commission (NLC) chairperson Mohamed Swazuri on Thursday, Joho said that his administration will not entertain land grabbers.
He said that his government in collaboration with relevant state agencies will pursue and deal ruthlessly with individuals and companies that have grabbed or encroached on public land.
Joho noted that public land grabbing has hindered development I some areas within the county.
“My message to land grabbers is for them to utilize the ‘window’ period given out and return the grabbed property or be ready to face the law,” he said.
The governor said that a committee is in place to pursue land grabbing cases and ensure repossession of the same property.
He urged locals to be vigilant and report to the county government on cases of grabbing. The governor also asked residents to be careful not to fall victim to land grabbing cartels and con-men.
He said that cases of locals being duped their land by con-men are on the rise in the county.
The governor at the same time appealed to the National Lands Commission to fast-track issuing of land titles to genuine landowners.
He observed that land conflict remain a problem noting that it can be addressed through the issuance of titles.
Swazuri on his part said that his commission is working to ensure that all grabbed proper is repossessed. He observed that case of land conflict had reduced significantly following the establishment of the commission.
