The government has received Sh25 billion to fight HIV and Aids.

The money from Global Fund will see an additional 300,000 people put under anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment in the next four years.

While signing the agreement with the international organisation, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich revealed the government has also set aside additional Sh10 billion to boost the HIV and AIDS fight, Sunday Standard reports.

"The government has allocated Sh10 billion for the period between 2018 to 2021 to support HIV, malaria and tuberculosis preventions in Kenya," he said on Saturday.

This will push the total number of people in ARV therapy to 1.3 million with Sh38 billion.

The CS said of the six agreements signed, three grants worth Sh26.3 billion will be implemented by the National Treasury through the Health Ministry.

The other three worth Sh7.1 billion and Sh4.6 billion will be handed to non-state partners Kenya Red Cross and Amref respectively.

Rotich said the partnership with Global Fund, which will run from January 2018 to 2021, is in line with the government's sustainability agenda to meet its 20 per cent obligation of co-financing.

"With this new grant, we will continue to support prevention, diagnosis and treatment interventions for HIV, TB and malaria," he noted.

Data from the Ministry of Health obtained by Sunday Standard shows only 82,000 people with TB are reached for treatment compared to the over 138,000 new cases every year.

"The fight against TB has received boost as the ministry will intensify the tracking of defaulters of treatment and tracing of missing cases," Rotich noted.
