During his tenure in office, United States of America (USA) President Barack Obama once linked former Kilome MP John Harun Mwau to drug trafficking. Obama, who is coming to Kenya for the first time after leaving power, wanted the man arrested and charged over the same.  His government insisted that the lawmaker owned the largest heist of 1.1 metric tons cocaine heist netted on Kenya soil in 2004.

The drugs were estimated at Sh6 billion. The US also claimed that Mwau was the narcotic kingpin not only in Kenya but also feeding European, Asian and US market. The billionaire, however, maintained that he was innocent. Things escalated to the point that Obama directed for the freezing of his account.

"Mr Mwau is viewed as among the more powerful and active narcotics traffickers in the region. He is involved in international and domestic drug trafficking," said Adam Szubin, Director of America’s Office of Foreign Assets Control in a statement released to the media house.

Mwau said that the allegations were weighty and sought for legal action against the US government.

"These are grave, weighty and extremely serious allegations that should have been reported to police and evidence provided because the offenses are punishable by long terms of imprisonment and even death," said Mwau.
