Traders dealing in chicken at Kisumu’s Jubilee market have castigated premier hotels in the town over what they termed as lack of support in their business ventures.
The business men and women said the hotels hardly purchased their chicken and if they did, the terms of payment used were not friendly.
According to the traders, the hotels always instruct them to come for their payments at the end of the month or after their chicken had been consumed by customers.
Despite stocking healthy chicken in their trading stalls, the traders stated that their routine customers remained small restaurants, cooperative clubs and domestic consumers.
Bernard Ouma, a chicken trader at the market since 1997 said the only premier hotel that extended business to them was Royal City but cited that the Lakeside City had dozens of high-end hotels for instance Acacia, Imperial, Grand Royal Swiss, Metropark Hotel among others.
Ouma said that the Hotels would have widened their business berths if they partnered with them in the business.
Charlse Nyaido, another chicken trader at the market conveyed that the premier eateries where not interested in consuming their products adding that the trend was dealing a blow to their business.
He,however, disclosed that most top hotels prefer serving its clients with broiler type of chicken which he said was expensive and tedious to stock within the market setup.
Other traders who spoke to a Hivisasa writer linked the current trend to a believe that the chicken from the traders could be infected with diseases but the businessmen affirmed that they only stocked chicken whose health was good.
The traders have urged the County government to reign in on the situation and come up with policies that will see the hotels purchase some of their chicken in a bid to support their business.
