In a Facebook statement on Tuesday, the former Subukia Member of Parliament claimed that he paid a visit to the departed second liberation fighter and former veteran's family on Monday April 24, a visit that was, however, concealed by unnamed quarters.

Koigi who has repeatedly blamed retired President Daniel Moi's regime for Matiba's long time illness and ultimate death claimed that the media covering the event was awarded a 10,000 shillings bribe to avoid him and his speech in fear that he would reveal more about Moi's 24 year rule.

''Notwithstanding the 10,000 shillings media was paid not to cover what I said, I condemned detention for killing Matiba and expressed hope we would never have detention again in Kenya, saying, had it not been for detention, Matiba could not have suffered disease for 28 years and would probably have lived to be 100 years,'' the statement read in part.

In respect to the fallen hero, the leader stressed on the need for the ruling Jubilee government to acknowledge his efforts towards the current well being of the nation, suggesting that he be awarded a state funeral.

''I asked the government to fly flags at half mast and give Matiba a state funeral,'' he added.

Matiba who spearheaded the push for multi-party democracy in the 1990s earning himself the father of democracy tag died on April 15 aged 85.
