Seawater transport system in Lamu county might soon be paralyzed after six main boat docking jetty leading to the Islands collapsed following poor maintenance and rehabilitation by the ministry of public works and Transport of the National government.

The main Mokowe jetty, Manda Airport, Lamu Island jetty, Mtangawanda in Lamu East, Kizuke Jetty and Jetty ya Ng'ombe in Mokowe are currently in a terrible state after metals which were used for construction corroded with rust and hence collapsing.The situation is currently endangering lives of travelers in and out of the Island with local boat coxswain complaining of having a rough time during their routine pick and dropping passengers from and to the Island.Mohamed Shee one of the boat coxswain within the Island says boat operators and passengers are now forced to scramble through a single lane of the jets or at times forced to dock at the seashores which is extremely dangerous for women passengers.Speaking to the press at Lamu Island Jetty, Shee said boat operators were recently forced to take action to close down one of the lanes at the Island jetty after it collapsed from one side for fear of endangering lives of passengers.He said Lamu Island jetty was one of the most important docking sites which ferry passengers to all corners of the Island.Shee says all boat operators from different destinations either to Mokowe mainland, Kizingitini, Siyu, Manda airport among many other areas are now scrambling with only one lane despite the past when each destination had its own to ferry its passengers.He condemned the government for even failing to rehabilitate Manda airport jetty which ferries both local and International tourists aimed at enjoying the view of Lamu indicating it has also contributed to the collapse of the tourism sector within the region.Mohamed Shali also a coxswain condemned the use of metallic material to construct jets in Lamu as a wastage of government resources since it easily rusts.Shali said, all the jets in Lamu have collapsed because were constructed by use of metallic material and called on the government to come up with quick plans to put up permanent jets that will use the cemented material.Lamu deputy governor Abdulhakim Aboud confirmed the situation saying Lamu transport system is currently on the weighing scale following the collapse of the jets.He affirmed that, as county government, they have done a survey on the state of the jets and handed over their report to the ministry of Transport among other partners awaiting implementation.Aboud, however, warned residents and guests traveling in and out of Lamu to be careful from using lanes of those jets that have collapsed for the safety of their lives.Sea transport in Lamu is the main mode of transport for eighty percent of the county is found within the Islands.
