Emali/Mulala MCA Nichodemus Muthoka who sponsored the motion said he was not asking for a campus but a fully fledged university with branches in other counties.

The motion was seconded by Kikumbulyu MCA Jades Kalunda before it was debated and passed by the assembly on Wednesday.

While moving the motion, Muthoka said it's high time the Commission for University Education establishes public universities in all the 47 counties.

Muthoka said counties which do not have any public universities should be given first priorities in a bid of fully operationalizing the Universities Act, 2012.

"Mr.Speaker Sir, the establishment of a university will bring higher education services closer to our people and this will support the economic, social and cultural transformation by creating skills that will enable the Makueni County to achieve its developmental aspirations," Muthoka said.

In seconding the motion, Kikumbulyu South MCA Jades Kalunda praised the noble idea saying that it's appropriate time to devolve such services to the grassroots and for residents to enjoy fruits of devolution.

"We are sending a message to the Commission for University Education that residents of Makueni need a university in the County," Kalunda said.

In support of the motion, nominated MCA Miriam Ngena said the university's establishment will create employment to the locals hence boost the county's economy.

Another MCA, Elizabeth Kawembe said she was in full support of the motion since it will bring closer higher education services.

Members of the County Assembly unanimously passed the motion urging Commission for University Education, Cabinet Secretary For Education and the County Government to establish a public university in the county to be named, Makueni University.
