The incident happened at Kariako village in Riokindo, Kenyenya Kisii County.

It is alleged the angry residents raided the home of the man only identified as Sure and asked him to explain why he had fenced a piece of land belonging to the children of his elder brother who died two years ago.

“Sure recently fenced a piece of land belonging to the orphans and threatened to kill the orphans and inherit their parent’s property. Members of the public decided to seek answers from the man who failed to defend himself prompting to the thorough beating from angry residents,” said Pius Mose, one of the residents.

Area chief identified as Motoki confirmed the incident and said he rescued the man from the jaws of death.

“I rescued the man from the hands of angry residents who had threatened to lynch him for mistreating orphans. Land grabbing cases in the area are on the rise and members of the public must be vigilant to kick out cartels of this kind,” he said.

Motoki warned the public against taking the law into their hands saying crime suspects must be reported to the police.

He said the man was forced to apologize to the orphans and residents.

“The man has promised to respect the orphans and ensure no one grabs their land. His movements in the village will be followed keenly to ensure he does not harm the orphans or residents who caned him in public,” said the administrator.
