This happened on Tuesday in Ikonge, Nyamira County.

Philip Mabuka, the owner of the farm said he heard dogs barking on Tuesday night at the farm and he decided to check what was happening.

"The suspect could have managed to harvest all sukuma wiki at the farm were it not for the dogs. I switched on my torch when I reached near where the dogs were and saw the man busy harvesting vegetables," he said.

Mabuka said he immediately blew a whistle to attract members of the public but the suspect jumped over the fence and fled into the darkness abandoning 4 sacks of sukuma wiki he had already harvested.

Area assistant chief identified as Jared confirmed the incident and said crime is on the rise in the region.

"The rate at which crime is happening in the area is high. Members of the public should be vigilant especially at night because thieves are stealing farm produce from the farm at night to sell to the public during the day," he said.

He assured that Nyumba Kumi officials with the help of police officers will intensify security patrols in the area at night to ensure criminals are kept off.
