A young man fell into a well on Tuesday evening at Amasago village, Kisii County.
According to his mother, Mary Moraa she had sent James Kombo to his grandmother's home when the incident happened.
"I sent him to his grandmother's home only for me to receive a call from a local chief that he had fallen into a well," said Ms Moraa.
Area chief Mr James Momanyi said that the man fell into the well and could not call for help as it is so deep.
He said that Mr Kombo is mentally challenged.
"The deceased fell into the well and from look of things could not call for help as it is so deep. His body was seen by a woman who went to fetch water at the well," said Mr Momanyi.
Mr Momanyi warned locals who dig wells and leave them open saying that they risked the lives of many people.
"I ask anyone who has dug a well to ensure that it is not left open as many kids may jump into the wells. We can prevent similar cases in future by us being responsible," he said.
The body was later taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
