The crime took place in Kiamuturi village in Mathioya on Monday, after which the suspect, Zachary Githiomi, went to the nearby Mioro Administration Police Post and reported that he had 'killed his mother',  Citizen Digital has reported.

According to witnesses, Githiomi had been spotted roaming the village with the machete a few days prior to the incident.

Confirming the incident Monday evening, Mathioya OCPD Pauline Mwangi said that the suspect reported having attacked his mother,  65-year-old Regina Wanjiru, with the machete.

According to doctors at Kiria-ini Mission Hospital, Wanjiru's left hand had been completely cut off and the right one slightly severed.

This is not the first time Githiomi is accused of engaging in such violent criminal acts.

According to his brother Charles Mwangi, the suspect is reported to have attempted to kill his mother a few months ago.

Mwangi claimed that his brother was involved in an attempt to torch their mother's house a few months back before he was arrested and presented in court.

However, his mother withdrew the case, opting to solve it out of court.
