The incident happened on Tuesday at Iranda village in Bonyamatuta, Nyamira County.

Neighbors said the man identified as Albert Ongoncho picked a quarrel with his wife accusing her for giving birth to only female children.

“Ongoncho has always attempted to send away his wife because she has been giving birth to only female children but through the elders' intervention the woman has been staying.

"It seems he has waited a male child for long and decided to set his house on fire so that the wife can go away," said Walter Moturi.

Area Nyumba Kumi official Edward Migiro confirmed the incident and said the man used petrol to set the house on fire.

"Ongoncho bought petrol which he used to burn his 9wn house. Efforts by residents to stop him did not give fruits. Nothing was salvaged from the house because the fire flames spread too quick," he said.

Erick Mokandu, area pastor said parents should not discriminate children saying any child either male or female is a blessing from God.
