What was meant to be a genuine war against contraband sugar which is also suspected to contain hazardous mercury, has been turned to political fist fight between loyalists of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, reports the Standard.

By Tuesday, over 10,000 bags of sugar believed to have been illegally imported had been seized by authority across the county.

A section of politicians allied to Ruto have dismissed the crackdown as witch-hunt as tension engulfed both camps in the ruling Jubilee party.

"You can easily say who is behind the illegal business. Look at who is complaining and you can easily tell which side of Jubilee he is," said a confidant of Uhuru.

In parliament, MPs shut down Majority Leader Aden Duale, a close confidant of Ruto, who has also been adversely mentioned in the illegal business.

But in a rejoinder, the Garissa Town MP has downplayed reports linking him to the business, insisting that he is only interested in hotel industry.

"My family does business in hotel and pharmaceutical. We have never done a single sugar business. We are going to tell you who are involved in the business," he said.

Interestingly, the two camps are also rocked in vicious war on the fight against corruption with Ruto's camp crying foul over alleged witch-hunt from President Uhuru.
