Cases of malnutrition in Mombasa County have recently been reported to have decreased owing to the continuous efforts by the County department of Health together with implementing partners who focus on nutrition.

Residents who have been struggling to get a balanced diet and to put a simple meal on their table, can now afford a smile after being economically empowered.

Through the coordination and support offered by G.R.A.C.E Africa - one of the county partners, over 100 trainers comprising of representatives of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Faith Based Organizations (FBOs), and Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) were engaged in a training programme on Monday.

The programme later passed the same knowledge to local members of the community drawn from different areas in the six sub counties on matters of savings.

The programme dubbed as SILC (Savings and Internal Lending Communities) was initiated in March 2016 with training that borders along socio-economic transformation of the common Mwananchi.

Cases of malnutrition are rampant especially in the informal settlement areas where getting a decent meal is a challenge.

Residents have slowly drifted from unhealthy eating habits to a more balanced diet approach after embarking on the SILC programme and getting in saving groups which are now giving them the financial freedom to afford basic amenities.

"Many, especially young mothers are expressing confidence in bringing up their children who are now healthy and free from any malnutrition related diseases due to the best practices taught on proper feeding and financial management," read a statement from Mombasa Sub County Administration.
