Confirming the incident, Eldoret East OCPD Richard Omanga said members of the public tipped police officers about the hidden sugar from where it was being distributed to various shops and kiosks for selling.

“The public alerted us about the hidden illegal sugar in the shop. We acted immediately and seized 57 50-kg bags of sugar alleged to have been imported from Brazil,” said the OCPD.

He said the samples of the sugar have already been taken to a government chemist for tests.

Omanga warned traders against selling contraband sugar to the public saying anyone found will face the law.

“We will deal with traders selling contraband sugar in the region. It is time for rogue traders to surrender to police before we catch up with them. Members of the public should also alert us in case any trader is selling contraband sugar,” he said.

This comes barely a week after over 250 bags o sugar suspected to be unsafe for human consumption was nabbed in a leading Eldoret supermarket's stores.
