More than 1000 residents were forced to spend the entire night in cold after their residential areas were submerged following heavy rains which led to Galana river bursts its banks.

The incident which happened at Kakuyuni ward in Malindi Constituncy left hundreds of locals counting losses and distraction as moving water swept away maize and crops which had been planted in the farms. 

Fatuma Masopero a resident at Madunguni village said that situation became worse after the flowing water spread into their houses forcing them to flee with their children for safety.

“By midnight things were a bit controllable but when it reached early morning were surprised to see water flowing indifferent direction towards our houses," she said.

“As a mother and a woman I was forced to pick what could be best for me and flee to a suffer area with my children,” she added.

She urged the government and well-wishers to intervene and assist them with food and beddings as they are seeking to relocate to more safer areas within the village.

Meanwhile Goshi area acting Chief Joseph Ziro said that residents who were affected by night ordeal were almost 1000, assuring them that as administrative official they will provide security for those who were affected.

“As long as you, move to safer places we will always be with you till things turn to normal,” he said.

However area MCA, Nickson Mramba accused the disaster management in the county government over negligence saying they are slowly in responding such crisis.

“I have been tip-off that there are 4 damns in the highlands areas which are full and will burst in the next 72 hours, waters will be everywhere here, if quick actions are not taken things will be worse to these residents,” he said.

He called upon the county and national government to,move in as soon as possible before it is too late, adding that the residents have equal shares like other Kenyans to be attend to.
