At parliament on Thursday, KEBS Managing Director Charles Ongwae insisted that the contraband sugar was free of poisonous elements after systematic tests.

In Nyamira, a group of business community led by Samuel Otendo now wants the CS to resign for 'misleading' the public.

"The minister never carried out any research and his actions have cost us fortune. People are no longer buying sugar from stores and this is dangerous for the economy.

"We demand that he resigns if at all he respects morals. Even his colleagues have openly differed with him," he said.

But in Naoribi, DCI chief George Kinoti insisted that the impounded sugar contained high levels of mercury thus making it risky for human consumption.

Currently, over 20,000 bags of contraband sugar have been impounded following Matiang'i's directive early this week.
