A mother has been remanded by a Kibera court after she was arraigned to answer to charges of burning her daughter.

The court heard that Florence Auma Ochieng set her 17-year-old daughter on fire as punishment for going home late.

The prosecution told the court that the accused committed the crime on December 3 in Kawangware 46, Nairobi.

The court heard that the suspect on the material date willfully poured kerosene on the minor's skirt and then struck the match.

The suspect is said to have locked her child in the house for more than a week, and applied toothpaste on her wounds, instead of taking her to hospital.

The court heard that the suspect allegedly took the girl to a friend's house to prevent suspicion by neighbours but her condition worsened, forcing the child to be taken to hospital.

The suspect did not, however, plea to the charge of cruelty to a child and chief magistrate Joyce Gandani ordered for her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before she takes plea.

The case will be mentioned on January 24.
