A Nakuru MP has called for the abolition of the devolved system of governance in the country.
Nakuru Town West legislator Samuel Arama says this is because county governments have failed to deliver on election promises to the electorate.
The rebel ODM lawmaker on Wednesday said the county governments have failed on the development agenda yet they are very expensive to run.
“If there is a referendum on the disbanding of county governments, I would be the first person to support it,” said Arama.
The lawmaker, who is fiercely opposed to his Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leader Raila Odinga’s push for a referendum, said he would also advocate for a referendum that would abolish positions of political parties’ nomination of MCAs, senators and MPs.
“It would be prudent to do away with these seats so that our national government can save money. Most of the money is going to waste as it is used to pay them,” said the MP.
Arama, however, expressed his support for Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and his administration.
“Our county government is okay and so is our governor who has recently come to my side in opposing the referendum calls by Raila and fellow governors. I am happy that at least he (Mbugua) has shown our county the way to go.”
