A Nairobi court will on Tuesday decide whether a Muslim cleric who was arrested in Marsabit Town over the weekend should be held for a month to enable police carry out thorough investigations before charging him.
Magistrate Martha Mutuku will do so following an urgent application by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.Through State Counsel Duncan Ondimu, the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) wants to be allowed to hold Sheikh Guyo Gorsa with a view to undertaking detailed interviews with him to find out his co-conspirators.According to ATPU, it is believed that the Muslim cleric has other associates who are yet to be apprehended but their arrest is being vigorously pursued by security agencies both within and out of the country.
Investigations so far show that Gorsa has been in constant communication with a number of known terrorists based in Somalia and in Kenya.
On his part, the Gorsa has opposed the application through his advocate insisting that police have no basis to detain him for four weeks pending trial.
Magistrate Mutuku was urged not to allow the ATPU hold him for more than two days as they have no sufficient evidence of him committing an offense.
ATPU says in its application that Gorsa was arrested due to his influence on the terror group, recruitment, and radicalisation of youths in Marsabit to undertake terror activities.
His arrest on Saturday sparked protests that led to the death of three people and damage to property.
