Commuters at the Likoni crossing have been handed a reprieve after MV Jambo resumed operations on Tuesday evening. Before the new development, ferry users had to spend hours at the channel due to congestion.

The woes of the users had deepened on Monday after the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) withdrew MV Jambo and MV Nyayo after they developed mechanically related issues.

The three ferries operating at the channel; MV Harambee, MV Likoni, and MV Kilindini could not sustain a smooth flow of traffic at the place. According to KFS Managing Director Bakari Gowa, the technical team fixed the problems of the ferry before it was brought back.

“MV Nyayo had some problems in the engine but that one has been sorted out. Engineers have been working on the ferries since Monday night and managed to restore it. It is now back on operation,” he said. He further called upon ferry users to be patient whenever there is a breakdown, adding that the team was committed to better service delivery.

On his part, Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki assured the ferry users of security as they cross the channel. At least 320,000 people and 6,000 vehicles use the Likoni channel on a daily basis.
