Heavy destruction and loss of lives have been reported in various parts of the country. In the case of Nairobi County, Nairobi residents have put the blame on the drainage systems.

The heavy downpour in Nairobi on Thursday morning was a blessing in disguise for business-minded youths in the city centre.

The youths stationed themselves strategically in flood-prone areas in the CBD and made quick money by ferrying commuters across flooded roads.

Flood waters filled major streets and avenues in the city, with some commuters wading through it as they alighted from matatus.

Stranded commuters were also carried on the youths backs to safer locations, while others used trolleys. In one flooded point in the Central Business District, youths made quick cash from a shift bridge which they charged Sh10 for every person who used it.

In another widely shared video on social media, some youths are seen standing at the entrance of matatu ready to ferry commuters on their back. Commuters were charged differently considering the distance and risk taken.
