A new mosque has been opened at Majengo, Mombasa County to de-radicalize youths who were radicalized to join Al shabaab.
The East Africa Sufi Council chairman Abdulkadir Al-Ahdal, while opening the mosque on Tuesday, requested Muslim faithful and preachers to use mosques and madrasa to counter extremist narratives being experienced at the coast, and across the country.
“We must reach out to young people and stop them from falling into the trap of radicalisation and violence. We will teach them about peace, unity and coexistence,” said Sheikh Al-Ahdal, as quoted by daily nation.
Sheikh Al-Ahdal also requested all Muslims preachers, scholars and madras teachers, to spread and teach the true religion of Muslims. He urged them not to promote extremist views in their teachings nor recruiting youth into terrorist organisations.
Aboud Rogo and Abubakar Shariff who was popularly known as Sheikh ‘Makaburi’, were two known Muslim preachers that were believed to have been into radicalizing youths to join militia group in Somalia, Al shabaab. The preachers were gunned down by unknown shooters.
“Clerics should counter terrorism using mosques. Muslim scholars should stand up against those sowing seeds of discord and disunity. Places of worship should promote peace, unity and coexistence among people of different faiths,” added Sheikh Al-Ahdal.
