Armed policemen on Wednesday sealed off the Nakuru County assembly where a civil society lobby had promised to protest alleged misuse of funds.
Led by the OCS at Central police station, the policemen screened everyone gaining access to the premises and when officials of the National Civil Society Congress (NCSC), which had planned the Ondoa Panya campaign realised this, they hastily backed off.
The civic body had intended to release the rats to harass the MCAs but their bid flopped after they failed to gain access to the assembly premises. They claimed that MCAs overshot their financial budget and wasted money through foreign trips.
The civil groups involved instead opted to call for a press conference where they disclosed that they had instead written protest letters to all the 74 Nakuru MCAs.
Centre for Multi-Party Democracy’s John Wamagata and Cidi Otieno of the Rapid Action Team at the NSSC accused the MCAs of hiring hooligans to cause chaos.
Wamagata said that they intended to deliver the letters peacefully but they learnt that a group of youths were waiting for them at the county assembly. He said that they will use whatever means to deliver letters to all the MCAs countrywide.
He said that they intend to sue MCAs from Turkana County for making foreign trips at a time when residents of the county were facing starvation.
Recently, MCAs have been criticised for their lavish spending of public money on foreign trips. The county assemblies have defended the trips saying they were meant to help ward representatives acquire new skills from other democracies.
