Nakuru County foresters on Wednesday morning nabbed a lorry carrying over 1,000 posts of cedar trees believed to have been illegally felled from the Mau Forest Complex.
According to the Mau South Forest Complex police commander, Livingston Mbugua, the lorry was waylaid after a tip-off from members of the public. He added that the logs, worth millions of shillings, were being ferried to Nairobi.
Mbugua said the truck driver was to be arraigned in court.
Earlier this week, two other trailers carrying a cache of cypress logs were nabbed but their drivers escaped and are still being pursued by security personnel.
Mbugua has in the meantime praised members of the public for giving vital information to the authorities. He said that will go a long way in curbing illegal logging in the Mau and protected forest areas.
He said his department will be relentless in pursuing thugs bent on destroying the vital national water catchment area and urged the public to keep up providing such information.
