President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto's 'marriage' will
not last, if history is anything to go by. There are various leaders who stand to benefit from the breakup of Kenyatta and Ruto ahead of the 2022 race to state house. The head of state has promised to back Ruto, but broken promises are part of politics. Here are four leaders who are likely to reap big from Uhuru-Ruto separation.
1. Wiper Leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka
The former Vice President considers Ruto as the greatest threat to his presidential dream. Kalonzo is likely to celebrate the divorce of the two leaders as he seeks to ‘Pita Katikati yao’. Kalonzo will be a force to reckon with if former prime minister Raila Amolo Odinga retraces his promise and supports him when that time comes. This means that we are likely to have more than two strong candidates with the potential of winning the seat.
2. Baringo Senator Gideon Moi
Baringo Senator could become the next Deputy President if Ruto and Uhuru go separate ways. Moi has, however, maintained that he wants to go for the nation’s top seat. The combination of Kikuyu (President) and Kalenjin (Deputy President) will be a force to reckon with. The Moi and Kenyatta family enjoy strong ties and they could pull a surprise when that time comes.
3. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga
The Luo political kingpin is likely to reconsider contesting for the nation's top seat in 2022. Although there are leaders calling for his retirement, Raila has maintained his presence in the political scene. Raila remains one of the most influential leaders in the nation and he can reorganize his team to give other candidates a run for their money. The choice of his running mate will influence the outcome of the poll.
4. Former Governor William Kabogo
Former Kiambu Governor is likely to be fronted as the Presidential candidate for the Mt. Kenya region if President Uhuru and Ruto part ways. Kabogo has been a force to reckon with since he entered the political arena. Despite losing his seat, Kabogo has remained influential. His recent meeting with former prime minister Raila Amolo Odinga left tongues wagging.
5. Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua
Ruto is likely to reach out to Machakos Governor to deputize him in 2022 if he parts ways with Uhuru. Mutua has hinted at contesting for Presidency. He is likely to change his mind if the political scene shifts with time. The county boss boasts of an exemplary performance scoreboard
Needless to say, the separation of Uhuru and Ruto will change the political arena. Kalonzo, Moi, Raila, Kabogo and Mutua are likely to reap big from the divorce. The leaders will be in better positions to deputize a presidential candidate or take the seat. Although President Uhuru has maintained he will not dump Ruto, anything can happen.
